What is TMJ?
TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint. This is the joint that attaches your jawbone to the rest of your skull, and it has a great deal to do with how your mouth functions on a daily basis. You use your mouth for so many things every day and probably pay little to no attention to how it feels. That is, until it stops feeling fine. When you develop a chronic issue with the function of your TMJ, it is referred to as a TMJ disorder (TMD), or simply TMJ. A problem with this joint can cause you a great deal of pain, mainly because of how far the pain from TMJ can reach. The muscles that control this joint extend all the way up the side of your face into your temple region. That is why when you move your jaw, you see movement in your temple.
What are the symptoms of TMJ?
Symptoms of a TMJ injury or disorder can range from mild to severe. Mild symptoms include aching or mild pain within the joint, clicking when you move your jaw, or swelling in the area of the injury. More severe symptoms include pain when moving your jaw, locking of your jaw in the open or closed positions, and migraines and headaches. Dental professional are not quite sure what causes TMJ, but we are certain about what contributes to the development of the disorder. Grinding your teeth, or bruxism, is one contributing factor because of the massive amount of additional strain this puts on the joint. However, a TMJ treatment can be done to cure this injury or disorder.

What can be done to help my bruxism?
Dr. Petrosino of Smile Design Dental in Newburgh, NY can help stop your teeth grinding by crafting a custom-made oral appliance, or mouthguard, for you to wear at night. This will help you in two main ways. The first is that the mouthguard will protect your teeth from chipping, cracking, or breaking due to excessive teeth grinding. The second way it will help is by spreading the biting forces of grinding across your dental arch. This will lessen the force being applied to the TMJ and potentially save you from developing a painful joint disorder that will require other treatments to fix.
